Efficient HVAC maintenance can prolong your unit’s service life. Here’s what you need to know to make that happen.

Change your air filters

Clogged or dirty air filters block out the air. If you’ve been complaining about poor airflow, the problem may be resolved by replacing your air filters. For some units, replacing the units every 90 days is a must is standard, the Houselogic says. However, if you have pets or you live in a place where there’s plenty of dust, then you may need to replace your filters much more frequently.

Switch to a programmable thermostat

If you still aren’t using a programmable thermostat, then you’re missing out on a lot. Make HVAC maintenance easier by upgrading to a programmable thermostat. Being able to set temperatures throughout the day allows you to save on the amount of energy your unit consumes. Reduced consumption levels result in cost-savings that put more money in your pocket.

Do visual checks

You don’t need to be a licensed technician to check your unit once a month. Take a look at the central air conditioner, furnace or heat pump, depending on what your system has. Do you see signs of anything unusual? Are there signs of trouble? Be on the lookout for those.

Get help promptly

One of the many things that doom an HVAC unit are late service calls. If you already encountered a few signs indicating that something is wrong with your unit, then get help right away. Don’t put off making that phone call, hoping the issue will go away on its own. Ignoring the problems won’t make them go away. And waiting too long to get help will often mean that by the time pros get their hands on the system, it may be too late. Get repairs done promptly to prevent this from happening.
